Launched Tuesday (June 9), IBM’s new community-driven initiative will enable partner companies to gain real-time access to IBM subject matter experts to support sales leads and client implementations.  

Partners can also create personalized profiling tools to develop online communities that make their skills visible to other partners. They can connect with others on new technology innovations and joint sales leads. The idea is to help them develop and deliver new technologies online through interactive forums before test-marketing or taking offerings directly to clients.

A Deloitte survey of companies sponsoring online communities indicates that enterprises have begun to effectively use social media tools and online communities to engage with customers and employees for brand discussions, idea generation, and product discovery. 

But are companies using community-based business development models effectively? 

Of late, IBM has announced LotusLive, a cloud-based portfolio of social networking and collaboration services designed for business. LotusLive.com will serve as a single destination for all IBM Lotus online collaboration tools, including social networking, e-mail, file sharing and Web conferencing. It offers to help businesses simplify and improve the way they interact with their customers, partners, and suppliers. 

HP has already created an online consumer support community. An online support forum, customer care site, online classes, and how-to videos are among the components of the community-centric initiative. 

The Verizon Community Forums encourage consumers to submit questions, share advice, and get answers about Verizon's portfolio of broadband, entertainment, and communication services. For this, Verizon collaborated with Lithium Technologies, an online community solution provider. ...Continued
